‘Bacani Bacani’
The first weekend in Mozambique was spent in the seaside village of Tofo. The sand dunes posed a whole new experience for all three of us. It was an ongoing fight between us and the mosquitos, us and unpredictable electricity, us and sand, us and sand, us and sand, and in case I hadn’t mentioned it enough, us and sand. Tofo is a beautiful and picturesque fishing village in the middle of a concurred migratory route for humpback whales and whale sharks, on the edges of the Channel of Mozambique, in the Indian Ocean. We coupled our days with both a revamping of our approach (after our experience at Khanimambo) and enjoying the waves and the sea, as well as the culture and food.
During the weekend, we better defined the partnerships that are going to be created with the local universities and the NGO’s operating in Mozambique. Furthermore, we have started to set the groundwork for the Data Acquisition Training, based on cultural cues and digital resources, as well as the premise of systems thinking.
In terms of leisure, we had time to indulge in several activities that the situation offered, ranging from surfing (although, waves were fairly poor and scarce) and going on a sea-safari, with the hope of seeing a whale shark. Although we were not lucky enough to see the whale shark, we did have the occasion to see humpback whales jumping 10 meters away from us!!!
