Rethinking Latrines

September 2017, Mozambique

Build a low-cost, socially and culturally acceptable latrine that will avoid people using the sand at the beach as a toilet.

Mozambique has an immense potential to exploit the beautiful beaches with tourism. However, beaches are often covered in faeces as historically, Mozambicans did their necessities on the sand; as there was no “beach culture”. Finding a way of redirecting this behavior would enable the country to exploit it’s tourism industry, creating jobs and bringing wealth to a poverty-stricken population.
